About Don

I grew up in a small town and now live in the Los Angeles area*.  I’m madly in love with and very happily married (more than 25 years) to my college sweetheart, have two great kids, love my life, enjoy my job (university professor), and hope to (somehow) provide some kind of encouragement to others.  I love to read and learn.

I brought this over from my first post:

Many years ago (too many years ago), when I turned 30, I was staggered by how old I had become while allowing myself to just kind of wander through the life I had been given.  As a result, I spent several days creating a list of the things I wanted to accomplish with the rest of my life.  These became my “bucket list” twenty years before I ever heard that descriptor.  I stopped my list at fifty items and set about accomplishing as many items as possible – but not necessarily with a single-minded purpose to do so.

I’m not entirely sure why others blog, but my goals with this are simple: I want to put some of my thoughts and experiences in writing, share them with you (since you are reading this), and encourage you to pursue your own goals – no matter how unreachable they may seem.

As Walt Disney said, “If you can dream it, you can do it.”

Let’s see how it goes…

Wearing glasses makes you look smarter

I can’t remember where I obtained this picture, but it never fails to make me smile.

*Note – My family and I have moved to a small town in Northern California, so the last year and a half have been extremely busy, with new jobs and house hunting, remodeling the home we purchased, and making new inroads into a new community.  It’s been fun, but busy.  I’m hoping to find more time here now.

  1. Hi!! Thanks for the comment!!!The same thoughts you had/are having at age 30, are the same ones I am thinking about now–I am 25 and just going through life—not really living it. But in response to your posting, number one on my list is going pretty well. I am reading “The Procrastinator’s Handbook” by Rita Emmett. It’s actually pretty good and is helping me a lot. I made a list of long-term and short-term goals (things that have got to be accomplished within the next couple of years). And I make sure I do at least 2 things from that list every day. I also made a list on http://www.43things.com. They are long-term goals that I will probably post on my blog within the next couple of days. The website is really cool.

I look forward to hearing how your list is going.

  2. Hey thanks for the comment! Your blog is very encouraging!

Thank you. You have helped me meet a goal – being an encourager.

  3. Thanks for the good wishes dude. I hope things will work out for myself as well.

    Hang in.

  4. Thanks for the welcome, Don. I am looking forward to the adventure!

  5. Hey, brother… Appreciate you checking out the blog… And yes, Zona is my squad and can’t wait till kick off on Saturday – – We go bowling or bust this year…LOL

Thanks for the visit. We lived there in the 80s, when Sean Elliott and Steve Kerr were tearing it up. I used to watch Elliott when he was still in high school. He was great! We’ve gotta get it together this year.

  6. Nice to meet you too!

    Thanks.

  7. Hey Don. Nice to finally get a chance to read your ‘stuff.’ Enjoy the bloq. J-M0.

    Thanks for the visit. D-Piddy.

  8. You need a new header 😉

    You don’t like books?

  9. I love books, maybe its the lack of authors and labels 😀

I like the headers you create. You do a great job on them. I just like old books, so I started using this one when I saw this photo.

  10. Don love your header 😀

Thanks. I played with a generator until I found one I liked.

  11. Least to say, interesting blog.

It’s funny that today I first decided to look at posts tagged humor and, no joking aside, I laughed.
But all joking aside, you’ve put a dent in a somewhat morbid outlook, crack in the shell that surrounds me, and otherwise strained, sprained, stained view of things, even with solemn, serious and decidedly absurd, story telling on my part. You shall keep my head above water…

Thank you for that, you made my day.
Thanks for the visit and comment. I hope you’ll stay around.

  14. YOU ARE SO ENTERTAINING
    THANKS

    Happy to entertain.
Thanks for the visit and comment.

  15. Hi! What do you teach? If you don’t mind- where? I am in Orange County, close to L.A. I am in school right now. I am an English major, and I am rolling over into Grad school. My end goal is my doctorate. My emphasis is 19th century Victorian literature, particularly class and gender.

I always love finding profs that blog because I feel like each post is like a little lesson outside of the classroom. Not always on literature or theory or what have you, but in how to manage academia as an adult on a daily basis.

    Thanks Don!

Hi J. I’m in the San Gabriel Valley area of LA, teaching at a grad campus. I teach leadership classes to aspiring school administrators, helping them earn credentials and degrees. A good friend of mine teaches your emphasis at a university in San Diego. I’ll let her know about you. She has written a couple of books.

This blog has turned into more of an entertainment outlet for me, but hopefully people are finding encouragement through humor.

I completed my doctorate a couple of years ago while working as a public school principal and helping raise two little kids. It is completely possible, depending on how badly you want it.

  16. I want it. I want it bad.

Thanks! I am very interested in your friend. I would love to see what they have written.

Good, because a doctorate is as much (or maybe more) about perseverance as it is about learning.

Hello! Saw this blog link in my stats as a referrer, so I checked it out.

I had a teacher named Don, too.

Keep writing, sir! God bless you and your family. 🙂

  18. Hi don. We have something in common….. You teach leadership to aspiring administrators and I want to become an administrator. My fiancé is finishing her phd at Vanderbilt university and I will work for another year as I apply to phd programs in educational leadership. What is being an administrator trainer like? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Although I enjoyed training administrators, I decided that I missed working directly with kids, so I am back at a public middle school as principal. After my experience, I believe adjuncts are the best at training aspiring administrators because their experiences and stories are current. Instead of a prof remembering an anecdote from 30 years ago an adjunct can tell one from 30 minutes ago. So I’m back in the best of both worlds – working with students as a site admin and also mentoring aspiring admins. Pick a great program, it will make a world of difference. Thanks for the visit and comment.
